Earthquake Risk in Bangladesh
Bangladesh occupies a tectonically precarious position at the convergence of the Indian, Eurasian, and Burmese tectonic plates, where active fault systems, including the Dauki Fault, the Sylhet Trough, and the Indo-Burman fold belt continue to accumulate significant seismic strain. Paleoseismic and geodetic evidence increasingly indicates that several locked fault segments within the Bengal Basin are capable of generating moment magnitude 7.0–8.5 rupture events, with recurrence intervals suggesting the region is statistically overdue for a major seismic episode.
