BEN Achievements

Working together with other pro-environment forces of Bangladesh, BAPA and BEN have achieved many successes. Though much more needs to be done, it is necessary not to lose sight of these achievements.

Development of Environment Movement

BEN played the initiating role in organizing ICBEN-1, which led to the formation of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA). BAPA now leads the civic environmental movement. Additionally, the National River Protection Movement (JNRA) and Adibashi Poribesh Rokkhya Andolon (APRA) were formed. The fact that Bangladesh has a strong civic environmental movement of national scope is BEN’s most important achievement.

Various Pro-Environment Steps

Joint work by BEN, BAPA, and others has led to concrete government actions. While implementation weaknesses remain, these steps signify important progress:

Key Government Actions
  • Replacement of leaded gasoline
  • Ban on two-stroke engine vehicles
  • Re-imposition of plastic bag ban
  • Task Force for river protection
  • Adoption of Wetlands Protection Act
  • Adoption of Building Construction Rules
  • Detailed Area Planning (DAP) for Dhaka
  • Relocation of tanneries to Savar

Documentation & Policy Analysis

BEN has significantly contributed to documenting and analyzing environmental problems. The BAPA-BEN conference volumes serve as the most comprehensive source of information on these issues. The resolutions adopted at these conferences provide comprehensive policy recommendations and are now important references for students and researchers.

Regional Alliance for Rivers

BEN and BAPA have established alliances with experts and activists in South Asian countries, particularly India and Nepal, to protect common rivers. Large contingents from these nations participated in river conferences in 2004 and 2013, helping shift the focus from a Commercial Approach to an Ecological Approach for river disputes.

Raising NRB Awareness

BEN has successfully informed the Non-Resident Bangladeshi (NRB) community about environmental issues through regular seminars, rallies, and events. This has provided a platform for NRBs to actively participate in the common struggle for environmental protection.

International Alliances

BEN has established contacts with international and host-country environmental organizations. Its participation in global campaigns, such as those against climate change, has earned appreciation and helped foster alliances with non-resident communities from India, Nepal, and other South Asian countries.
