BAPA Distributes BEN Disaster Fund in the Teesta River Area

Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA) distributed 900 blankets among the people affected by the October 2021 Teesta flood. Purchased with a fund of Taka 200,000 collected by Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) the blankets were distributed in the following areas: 

– four villages of Ulipur and Rajarhat upazila in the district of Kurigram

– five villages of Sadar, Aditmari and Kaliganj upazila in the district of Lalmonirhat

– five unions of the Ganga upazila of Rangpur district, and

– three places of Dimla upazila in the district of Nilphamari

A discussion titled “River and People” preceded each event of blanket distribution. Local people thanked BEN for its concerns and cooperation. Local river activists were enthusiastic about the events. The distribution events helped identify twenty spots for installing tube-wells for drinking water.   

Faridul Islam, BAPA leader and the president of the Teesta Nodi Raksha Committee, who led the events thanked Sharif Jamil and Taksim Khan for their help with the procurement and the disbursement of the material. Faridul Islam thanked BEN and BAPA for their well-timed relief efforts. Faridul requested BEN to look into the proposed tube-well projects which will be followed up locally through town hall style meetings.
